Powertrain testing and integration for an eVTOL aircraft facing certification

19 September 2023 11:40 - 12:10

Lilium develops an electric vertical take-off and landing jet (eVTOL jet), which is maneuvered by 30 electric ducted fan engines hosted in movable flaps and powered by batteries. The jet can take off and land vertically and transitions into forward flight during cruise. This way of aircraft operation is unique and novel in the industry, which brings challenges not only in the development of new technology.

The safe aircraft operation must be demonstrated to the certification authorities, however there is no existing set of rules nor an existing blueprint for how this can be achieved. Lilium has developed testing capabilities and methods to meet these challenges. A full-scale demonstrator was tested and integrated with lab testing means to enable safe flight test operation. The test capabilities were developed and are still further expanded alongside the rulebook of certification in a flexible and adaptable way to be prepared for all eventualities and a successful certification of the final Lilium eVTOL jet.
